About me

 I'm Pablo Poulain — a Paris-based geologist (PhD) and self-taught photographer. My path weaves together science and storytelling: during the day, I work with volcanic hazard models and risk scenarios; through the lens, I capture fleeting moments of light, texture, and human presence, wherever I go.

 I hold a PhD in Geosciences from Université Paris Cité, completed in partnership with the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP) and the French Geological Survey (BRGM). My research focused on numerical modelling of submarine landslides and tsunami hazards in volcanic settings, using tools such as HySEA, SHALTOP, and FUNWAVE-TVD. Through this work, I’ve gained deep experience in scenario-based hazard assessment, quantitative risk analysis, and multi-institutional collaboration—particularly during the Mayotte seismo-volcanic crisis, where I contributed to both scientific modelling and operational risk communication.

 In parallel, photography has been my way of exploring the world beyond equations and data. From the structured geometry of urban spaces to the spontaneity of street life, from lunar silence to the intensity of live music, I aim to document atmospheres as much as events. My portfolio is organized into thematic series—each one a chapter in an ongoing visual journal shaped by travel, curiosity, and attention to detail.

 Beyond my scientific and artistic practice, I’m also interested in the real-world applications of research. At the French Prime Minister’s Secretariat for Defence and National Security (SGDSN),     I worked on integrating climate risk into national crisis planning, reinforcing my belief in science as a tool for resilience.

 Today, I continue to navigate between disciplines—contributing to research on probabilistic forecasting, vulnerability, and recovery frameworks, while capturing visual fragments of life along the way.
